We're going to talk about why blogging is important to your business

Posted: 11 Feb 10 at 23:02 What is a blog?
Think about a news website. All of their news is written into different articles. It’s all on separate pages. And people can comment on it.

A blog is very similar. You post articles and they appear on pages for people to read and comment on. For an individual, it’s a way of posting their opinions. For a business, it’s a way of putting your business in the spotlight on the internet.

(What you're reading is a blog by the way)

What could we use a blog for?
  • Articles on what your business is currently up to – a good way of showing case studies online.
  • Expressing opinions or work ethics of your business’ industry – discuss the current issues in your industry.
  • Getting user responses to ideas you want to put forward to them.
  • Give your business an active voice.
Benefits of blogging
  • Search engines adore new content to a website. By constantly posting new pages, with new words, search engines will store information about your website better to help you be found for the keyword searches you want.
  • Get other users to help create content on your website by posting comments (as well as getting their feedback).
  • Show off to potential clients – they’ll know that you are continually working, knowledgeable and active.
A nifty idea
Search Engine Spiders (little critters that crawl the internet for content to assign to a website) follow hyperlinks that you put on a page. They can assign the content around that hyperlink to the new page. So why not write specific blog posts about sectors of your company, and then leave a hyperlink back to that page on your main website – increasing the chance of the page you linked to being found in a search engines by increasing the keyword pool (words from your article).

Very simply: words you write in a blog post will be seen as terms to return search results for on google for the page you've linked to.

The best way of keeping Users updated
For the majority of blog systems when a user visits your blog they will have the option of signing up to your RSS feed (also known as Really Simple Syndication). They can store this in a program or their internet browser and will automatically get the headlines of new blog articles that are posted.

Have a look at our RSS feed - your browser might even let you subscribe to it.

What's available to us?
There are a variety of free blogging systems (as well as paid for ones) on the market. The only cost potentially to you is if you want the blog to be branded (your colour scheme/theme) and where it is stored on the internet.

Blogger
WordPress
And more...
(In fact our Content Management System can come with a blog as one of its modules)

As such it doesn't need to be difficult to get your business set up with a blog. If you would like some assistance in doing so please get in contact with us.

You're quite right. Blogging is a key component to a business marketting themselves on the web. There are other forms of getting the word out about your business to people on the internet through Twitter and Facebook. Or try Google Ad campaigns. I guess it's all about keeping potential clients (and current clients) updated with what you're doing. I've seen plenty of websites that are appear to be out of date and you have no idea if the business still exists or is operating. A business blog that is updated often especially shows that you're still active and still trading - websites and content can quickly become outdated on the internet.
