Social Media vs. Word of Mouth

Posted: 15 Feb 10 at 15:02 You're sure to have your own experience of whether you get your contacts for business from your website or from people spreading the word about how great your business is.

We definitely wouldn't have gotten off of the ground had we not been put in contact with clients by "Word of Mouth". And we still operate a lot by our clients telling other companies what a great service we have to offer.

Other than that we've gone to Business Networking events held in Surrey and have exchanged details with other businesses face to face.

So where's our need for advertising using Social Media?

In case you're not aware, Social Media is the update of new content and links to your website across websites such as Twitter, Facebook, Digg and many more. It's putting information and a link back to you out on the web (generally and hopefully for free).

Depending on the website you use to promote yourself through social media, it can help to drive Google back to your website to take another look at what you have to offer - leading for you to appear more in search results.

But other than that it's like networking. Just over the internet. However, for a company to see your latest updates they have to be your "friend" or "following" you to begin with.

But with some Social Media websites your content on there will also be shown as page in search engine results. So they can click on that page, see the link to your website and off they go to your homepage.

But which is best for us?

It depends on your business. It depends how good your copywriters are at getting the keywords specific to your company. And it depends on how much time you have to devote to it.

Networking at a business event can take a couple of hours a month. Word of Mouth can be at absolutely no time cost to your business.

However to advertise yourself through Social Media requires a lot of time for regular updates, research on the best keywords to use (keywords are the words we think people who visit a search engine will type in), and generally if your "Tweet" about a brand new product, service or blog you need to have the content on the web to link to as well - or the whole effort was lost.

We like all ways of meeting and talking to new clients. We do some social media - we have a blog to link to after all - but we still rely on Word Of Mouth as a key way to touch base with new faces.
